Pastor Post - April 27, 2016

This Sunday we will continue our study of parables in Mark’s gospel, as we delve into Mark 4:21-34. Here, Jesus tells three parables, back to back to back. All are slightly different, but also have some things in common. As you read and pray over these three parables, consider the following:

First, in the parable of the lamp:

  • Notice Jesus’ sense of humor in verse 21. How ridiculous to place a lamp under a bed, or a basket!
  • What does Jesus mean when he says that everything hidden will come to light?
  • What other passages speak of Jesus as a shining light?
  • What does Jesus mean when he says in verse 25 that “to the one who has, more will be given, and from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.”

Second, in the parable of the seed growing:

  • How is the kingdom like seed being scattered on the ground?
  • How does the kingdom seed resemble a person going to sleep and then rising?
  • Think about the barrenness of local farm fields just a couple of months ago. What will those same fields look like a couple of months from now? How does that resemble God’s kingdom?

Third, in the parable of the mustard seed:

  • How does this small, unimpressive, seed, which grows into a most impressive tree, remind us of the kingdom?
  • Why might Jesus have added the detail about birds finding rest in its branches?

Fourth, in the summary statement in verses 33-34:

  • Why does Jesus explain the parables to his inner circle, but not to the crowds?

This is really a fascinating text, and I can’t wait to unpack it with you on Sunday morning!

See you this Sunday!
